These new spots from Dodge featuring the 2014 Durango and Ron Burgundy are fantastic.
The latest iteration of Dodge's SUV is a great vehicle; looks good, handles well for its size, hauls 7 people, tows things and can be had with a strong yet fuel-friendly V6. But even with an impressive resume, the Durango just doesn't sell in high volumes.
This is partly because the previous generation of Durango was, well, a joke. It looked like it was carved from a block of cheese by the same person who thought the Dodge Nitro was a good idea and the interior was more laughable than the exterior.
Frankly it wasn't competitive or desirable, both of which were a result of a lack of product investment from Chrysler's previous owners.
While the new Durango is a much better product, like not-related-to-the-last-one better , the SUV lives in the shadow of Chrysler's real cash cow sport utility, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a pretty damn good SUV too.
Hopefully this ad will help stir up a bit of awareness for Durango and drive foot traffic into local Dodge stores.
Here are a few more funny spots:

Honestly, Chrysler advertising has been on a roll since the bailout.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 20:41 |

Agree. BUT it takes a long time to convince people they're a new company.

Can't believe they have the balls to charge $2,000 for a navigation radio for my '14 Ram Cargo Van. $2,000.
Guess my delivery driver finna get his ass LOST.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 20:44 |

That's how they make their money back I guess. Why didn't you get an aftermarket unit? Those are just as good, if not better.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 20:49 |
|
Funny stuff....hey Juan how is the SRT Cherokee treating you? I'm surprised they haven't made an SRT Durango...the parts are already there, and the styling already screams high-performance SUV...seems like a no-brainer.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 20:53 |

Jeep is good. Not sure why they haven't rolled that dice, R/T w/ the Hemi is a good alternative.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 20:59 |

Agree about the R/T I tried to convince a client to get an R/T Durango...he ended up with a Sorento. Oh well...at least he got a good deal.

Buy a Garmin, and get an usb cable to load all your customers addresses. Never again lost. No excuses. And best part? you can download a daily or weekly log to know where he was.

So when are we going to move to the 21st century with this manual open and close glovebox, and finally go automatic?
Well Chrysler? I'm looking at you.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 21:44 |

Has Dodge made an SRT Durango before? I've never seen one in the wild.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 21:55 |

that was fucking hilarious.

Well, that escalated quickly.

I'm fine with a manual glove box. I hate manual doors and lift gates, and manual folding rear seats. They're obnoxiously slow, heavy, and an all around waste.

Waiting for the Edmunds review.
"Despite ads touting the size of the glovebox, it is actually quite small. The much cheaper Dart's glovebox can easily hold a laptop. This is typical of Dodge to promise a lot and then miss the mark. Because of this, we just can't recommend the Durango."
![]() 10/05/2013 at 22:15 |
|
If he likes the Durangos glove box he should check out the Darts. It might eat him whole. lol

30k became 52k real quick. I still want one, price be damned.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 22:27 |

That glove box isn't even comparable to the one in my Mazda3. I can seriously have to reach my whole arm in there to get something that's in the back.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 22:31 |
|
We looked at one of these. They were nicer and roomier than the similar priced Cherokee. The third row seat, which the Cherokee doesn't even have, was comfortable enough for both my wife and I and we're both 6'+. And the 6 is plenty powerful with great gas mileage. Will be buying one.

Consider the amount of uninformed people that own cars. If someone has a dead battery and the fancy electric glove box contains the owner's manual, they would lose their shit end up like this guy:
![]() 10/05/2013 at 22:40 |
|
I'm sure you meant you hate automatic accessories and doors n' stuff. Me too, to include, but not limited to my favorite bane - automatic, digital or touchscreen climate control: I had to take my Focus 5dr at a lower trim level to avoid all that nonsense and get some proper dials and buttons that won't break in a few years (also to get my manual trans too). I've never bought a used car with climate control that worked, but all the old fashioned units always worked fine.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 22:44 |

If history is any indication, it'll be $10k cheaper after one year. Things are lookin' up!

Will Ferrel trying to get out through the curtains makes this. Not sure if it's the makeup but I think he's starting to look old.

More like SELLS the shit out of the Durango's glovebox!
![]() 10/05/2013 at 23:05 |

I was thinking the same thing. He looks like some other dude dressed up in a Ron Burgundy costume for Halloween. It's like, you know it's supposed to be him, but something's just... not ... quite... right.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 23:53 |
|
that would be a No. Not if they're gonna replace it with a Jeep, there's no money in it.
It'd make a kick-ass SRT Jeep though. hah.
![]() 10/05/2013 at 23:57 |
|
I was just saying that about my Dart.. lol
(no good pics of it; but it's bigger than the in-seat-storage.. by a long shot; I practically go in up to my shoulder digging stuff out of there. lol

They should have dressed up his dog 'Baxter' as the horse...put a saddle on him etc.

The original Anchorman came out in 2004, so it was filmed 10 years ago.
Ten years will catch up to you, and now you feel old after thinking of where you were in life a decade ago.

Accually a horse has a lot more than 1 Hp.
Since
"A healthy human can produce about 1.2 hp briefly (see orders of magnitude) and sustain about 0.1 hp indefinitely; trained athletes can manage up to about 2.5 hp briefly[7] and 0.3 hp for a period of several hours" - yahoo answers
and a horse should have around 15+ Hp

Nope, there has been a rumor that they're working on one for a few years now but nothing official. It's a shame a Durango SRT 8 would be EPIC!

Anchorman is based in the 70's. He looks like Ron Burgundy, but old as fuck. Which is exactly how old he'd be in 2013 if he existed.
Unless I'm wrong. Which happens.
![]() 10/06/2013 at 11:05 |

That would be severely pushing the limits of the average consumer's thought process during a 30 second commercial spot.

Props for creative advertising. Sure, it didn't make me want to buy one, but I will recognize it among all of the other car based SUVs out there. I also know it has a decently powerful engine and gets reasonable mileage for a soft roader. In other words, money well spent by Dodge.

Should be a big boost that they were refusing to warranty pre-bailout cars, since they were not from the same Chrysler as the current one.

I like automatic doors and windows. But that's about it when it comes to automatic devices. And I agree on climate controls. Too hard to touch the screen accurately and adjust settings while driving. It takes too much time and takes the eyes off the road for too long.
![]() 10/06/2013 at 13:40 |
|
I saw one of these on the road the other day and thought, "Wow! The new Durango has almost completed the metamorphosis of the SUV to minivan. How long before they start selling "SUVs" with sliding side doors?" Sure, Chrysler has finally put some dollars into it, but taking Town and Country schematics and shuffling them into the design file hardly helps their case...

Can't believe you're buying navigation from the automaker. Those things NEVER measure up in price or quality to aftermarket options.

They made this thing. It was about as exciting as Ol' Shel's colostomy bag.

You know the orginal movie is ten years old now. Since it was set in the 70s shouldn't that set the sequel in the 80s? Ron Burgundy snorting blow while listening to Flock of Seagulls would make for a crappy movie though.
![]() 10/06/2013 at 17:54 |

Well that's just ridiculous. So how many horsepower does a small pony make?
![]() 10/06/2013 at 17:55 |

Its a regular SUV, numb steering, huge show off wheels with tiny profile, uber soft suspention and will struggle to get over any obstacle.

I have such a pointless pet peeve over the way every car commercial says "MPG" instead of just saying "miles per gallon."
It's saving what, two syllables? One tenth of a second? I suspect it's a KFC-style plot to make us forget that they're talking about fuel consumption and reminding us of just how expensive it is to drive these days.
Or maybe it's just bandwagonism.
Either way, it's beginning to drive me nuts, for basically no reason at all. I'm taking this far too seriously.
![]() 10/06/2013 at 21:02 |

You hate manual folding rear seats since they're slow, heavy, and wasteful? Even though power seats fold slower than your own arm can fold them, are lighter by the weight of an electric motor, and do something you can do perfectly well with your own digits...?

A couple years ago my family rented a Jeep Grand Cherokee (we didn't ask for it but got upgraded into it) and hated it. Underpowered, poorly made with cheap plastic and bad fit and finish it was a miserable week. Unless the new one is a lot better I can't see how people buy these.

A cool fact about the glovebox, it has a separate slot for the instruction manual packet above the main space. Very thoughtful.
